People thinks and acts in a very peculiar way most of the times. When they are happy and enjoying themselves, they become complacent and unaware of their surrounding; when they are stressed and being pushed, they become protective and make excuses; and when they are about to loose something, they try to find their way out of the mess unethically or using “dirty” tricks. Fortunately, I am able to witness these act everyday, and although I am not a perfect person myself, at least I have self-control on my consciences and actions.
I managed to catch up with a friend of mine couple of days back during lunch break. It was at the pantry when I was brewing my camomile tea (yes, I skipped my lunch). The first thing that he said to me was, “Did you here about si-polan-bin-si-polan resigned?”. Yes, the topic of the year was about people getting sacked, people resigned, people moved to Middle East, undeserved people who’s getting low rating, unexpected people getting high ranking, people postponed their wedding or engagement, and others. Strange? No, if you are in the company…
The morale had been all time low since I was with the company almost 5 years ago in 2005. Those days, the working environment was not that bad with good management and people’s welfare are being looked at. Then came the first wave of management change, where spending is abundant and a lot of micro-cronyism. Why? Imagine the year filled with let say 10 company events, but guess who’s the committee? The same faces for all the 10 events. And strange enough, they’re from the same department. Kiss ass? I’m not at liberty to accuse people…
Those were also the time when “invisible” people seems to be visible at the eye of the management, and vice versa; the time when doing less will ensure you get more; the time when showing your face more will ensure your immediate recognition; and ass-kissing were at large. If you think you’re getting the worse ranking of all for your appraisal, tell that to the other 600 colleagues of yours. But guess what? People doesn’t complaint much because we were bribed with so much gifts and incentives. Imagine at least 5-6 company gifts in a year ranging from BSN Saving Certs (amounting to RM800, fuel and shopping vouchers, and other tid-bits (the best was TV and microwave).
Then came the second wave of management change, where the kiss-asses were purged through a systematic reorganization, position deletion, down-sizing and transfer. The move in the first place gave a glimmer of hope to the less-performing people (for promotions), but they were about to be surprised by a bunch on nonsensical policies as mentioned in the previous blogs. Did the morale increase? It came tumbling down, not for a few but almost to all…
The air had been very gloomy for the past couple of weeks after the completion of mid year review. A lot of hearts and dreams shattered; and there’s also a lot of joy to deserving and undeserving people. Fair? I haven’t smell that for quite some time now… And maybe I will not. Where will I be in the next few years? Nobody knows… Should I be prepared for the inevitable? Perhaps the time is NOW…
Wassalam.
Life is like a bunch of tasty food; People will eat you until they are full; And throw you out when you’re bad… When you have a potential; they will exhaust you until your last breath; and then throw you out like a piece of s**t…
